Optimizing Energy Production using Co-substrates in the Anaerobic Digestion of Dairy Manure – 2006-2008

tLead Researcher: Anna Crolla – acrolla@alfredc.uoguelph.ca
Prepared for: Alternative Renewable Fuels Research and Development Fund - OMAFRA
Partners: Dairy Farmers of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-food Canada, University of Ottawa, Fepro Farms, Terryland Farms, Pinehedge Farms
The addition of organic substrates to the farm digesters will be evaluated for enhanced biogas production and reactor stability. Lab scale experiments will be utilized to evaluate and select appropriate co-substrates for farm scale digester testing and to optimize manure and co-substrate mixtures (C:N), temperature, pH and moisture content to enhance biogas production. The use of co-substrates to enhance biogas production will be verified in farm scale anaerobic digesters. Read more about the results here.
